Let’s Talk About Racism

Reach Out & Read Illinois serves and supports families all over the state, including many Black and Brown families, which have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as their disproportionate burdens of poverty, environmental pollution, systemic racism, and other toxins which prevent healthy growth and development. The death of George Floyd and many others before and after him causes grief and horror that hits so close to home for our Illinois families and pediatricians.

Reach Out and Read has an integral role and responsibility in working to address these issues, providing a platform for opportunity to children and families — especially in communities of color — in the youngest months and years of life, one built on relationships that we know are critical to their long-term development and ultimately as active, participating, equal members of society. Reach Out and Read stands with our communities in this crisis. We oppose racism, discrimination, brutality, and violence of any kind. We are committed to being a social justice organization, one where diversity, equity, and inclusion are woven into and guide our work and values.
